Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Shiver me timbers! There’s been quite a commotion on the high seas of Forres Sandle Manor today as our Nursery and Reception children donned their eye patches, brandished their cutlasses (of the cardboard variety!), and set sail on a swashbuckling adventure for Talk Like a Pirate Day 2025!

Areas of the Pre Prep building were transformed into the good ship FSM, and the crew of our youngest learners wasted no time diving into a treasure trove of pirate-themed fun and learning. From storytelling to singing sea shanties, the deck was alive with the sound of hearty “ARRRs!” and excited laughter.

Among the many treasures of the day, our little pirates:

  • Crafted their very own treasure maps, complete with winding trails and a big red ‘X’ to mark the spot

  • Practised their phonics by learning to write the letter ‘P’ for pirate, parrot, and plank!

  • Counted and sorted gold doubloons on their treasure hunts

  • Sang, danced, and played together as they sailed across imaginary seas

  • Took part in “vital pirate work” – painting cannons to defend the ship!

And what’s a pirate without their treasure? The children each selected their most valuable items and tucked them away safely into their class treasure chests – everything from shiny coins to secret gems and even a few soft toy parrots!

But it wasn’t all fun and games… Our budding buccaneers also learned about real-life pirate life, including their often limited diets. This led to an important lesson on the role of fruit in preventing scurvy – a real threat for pirates at sea! To bring this learning to life, the children made their own fruit skewers, enjoying every juicy bite and proudly munching their way to better pirate health.

“Why did the pirate go to school?”
To improve his arrrrr-ticulation!

The day was a perfect blend of imagination, creativity, and learning through play. Whether plotting routes across their maps, hiding their treasures, or relishing their fruity snacks, our young FSM pirates showed curiosity, teamwork, and boundless enthusiasm.

It’s days like these that capture the spirit of early years learning at FSM – where the classroom becomes a ship, a story, or a faraway land, and every child becomes the hero of their own adventure.

We’re so proud of our fearless crew, and until next time, me hearties… keep practising those ARRRRs!
