CHARLIE WAITE INSPIRES PHOTOGRAPHERS YOUNG AND OLD
International landscape photographer, Charlie Waite, gave the first lecture in the new ‘FSM Talks Presents…’ series last weekend. The talk was aimed at our pupils in Years 6-8 as part of their Saturday enrichment but members of the public who all share a creative passion for photography also joined in.
Charlie was truly inspirational – he talked about the influences throughout his career and the images they inspired. For one hour, the audience was transfixed by the visual beauty of his photographs, how he composed them, the thought that went in to each image. He kindly gifted his newest book, ‘Behind the Photograph’ to the school and our young photogs have been pouring over it ever since. The children told me they loved his stories and his kind, gentle manner captivated the children.
At the end of the lecture, many hands were raised as they wanted to ask specific questions furthering the knowledge they’d just gained. Charlie answered questions for over 40 minutes, with the audience only wanting more! His insight and experience included the difference between traditional cameras and digital cameras, use of colour vs black & white, and whether to use the viewfinder or digital screen. Many members of the audience have remarked that they left with a whole new and inspired view of their own photography.
Charlie was kind enough to donate his time for free, which allowed all proceeds to go to the Disabled Photographers Society – raising £220.
