It’s our Maths Week 2023 here at Forres Sandle Manor School. We’re looking forward to an exciting and engaging week of mathematics-related activities that will challenge and stimulate our students.

We have been planning for months and have organised a range of activities and events, both inside and outside the classroom, to allow our pupils to explore the subject further and develop their mathematical skills.

We hope that this Maths Week will give our students the confidence and enthusiasm they need to pursue a career in mathematics or any other field related to maths.

Monday 30th January – Maths Week

Maths Week - Monday

Year 5 had lots of fun with mental maths in the morning with a darts activity. There was a CSI investigation for Years 7 & 8 which focused on Algebra. This exciting investigation required the students to use their knowledge and apply their understanding of algebraic equations to solve the crime.  It also provided an excellent opportunity for the students to work together in teams and enjoy some competitive problem-solving.

Monday’s Maths Week Challenge

Each day, we’ll be setting you a quick Maths task to see if you can work it out.

One of the possible Answers:

355         100    50   10    7    3    1    (7 x 50) + (10 / (3-1))

Tuesday 31st January

Our Maths Week continues with our Year 7 and 8 students taking part in a Young Architects activity.

Today, as part of Maths Week, our Maths, Art and DT departments joined forces to explore the creative possibilities of a multidisciplinary approach to Mathematics.

Examining artists and architectural examples, ideas are shared about the character of cities.

Students go on to create imaginative drawings from varied source materials. Their ideas can then be developed into three dimensions using foam board. Participants gain an understanding of the connection between thought, drawing and model-making as part of the design adventure.

See more about these creative workshops here.

Wednesday 1st February

Our Maths Week continued today with children discovering and engaging with the subject in a fun and meaningful way. Through board games, the pupils were supported to explore mathematical topics in a more interactive and enjoyable way.

The higher and lower game was a particular favourite. The pupils were also able to practice their problem-solving skills, as they worked out the best strategies and techniques to win the game.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the activities and it was a great way for them to gain a deeper understanding of Maths.

One of the possible Answers:

611         25     6    5    4   3   1     (25 x 4 = 100)  (100 + 1 = 101)  (101 x 6 = 606)
                                                     (606 + 5)

Thursday 2nd February

Day 4 of our Maths Week here, and the children have been taking part in a Maths Treasure Hunt. The hunt has been a great success, with the children displaying enthusiasm and excitement as they search for the numerical answers scattered across the school grounds. This has provided an opportunity for the children to explore the school grounds in a new and different way while also learning maths skills in a fun and engaging way.

As the week progresses, the children are becoming more and more adept at solving the puzzles, and the number of correct answers is steadily increasing. It’s been a great way to bring math to life.

Friday 1st February

Our Maths Week has come to a close today, and Year 6 have been taking part in a mathematical escape room. This activity has been designed to test the student’s problem-solving skills and ability to think outside the box.

Year 7 & 8 students have been engaging in a unique and exciting mathematics challenge – a financial budgeting challenge. Through this challenge, the students have been exploring and understanding the real-world application of mathematics and have been learning how to make informed financial decisions.
