It’s been another very busy time for our champion skiers Samuel in Year 6 and Cameron in Year 2.
We recently heard from Samuel’s family who said:
This weekend Samuel travelled to Scotland for 2 races near Edinburgh, a first for him going that far North. The Saturday race was at a slope at the base of a small mountain at Firpark where there were 170 competitors and Samuel was in a group of 70 U10/U12s Girls and Boys. At this new slope, he put in a steady first run and placed 2nd out of the 70 competitors. For the second run, he put the ‘Hammer Down’ and was the only mini skier to get a sub 14 seconds with a winning Boys U12 and Fastest Mini Stubby Racer with a time of 13.72 seconds on the 120m slope. His reward was a Gold Medal, The Fastest Bairn Shield and a Ski Equipment Voucher.
For Sunday it was a trip 40 miles South to the Hillend Ski Slope, the longest dry ski slope in the UK at a whopping 400m down a shear drop. Another big group for the Eola GBR Series Race 3 Mini Competition with 55 competitors and 22 U12 Boys in Samuels Group. With only limited practice, razor-sharp skis and a fearless approach he put in the winning fastest time of the day on his first run with a 31.5-second run – 2.26 seconds faster than the next skier. The second run saw Samuel push even harder in the top section of the race track only to lose his outside ski and depart controlled skiing, however unperturbed he jumped up, hiked back up the slope to the missed gate and still ended the run with a quicker time than most. When asked how he found it – all we got was a matter-of-fact response – ‘it was ok, but a bit steep and off-camber!’
So a Gold Medal in the GBR National Series pushing him to the top of the Mini Boys Leader Board with 260 points and there are 2 races to go in early July at Samuels’s favourite ski slope in Chatham Kent.
A huge well done Samuel, absolutely amazing results!
